Sparking Innovation in Australia

This week is the Spark Festival in Sydney and there are a range of events to get you up to speed and engaged with the startup sector in Sydney. So it seems like a good time to take stock of the opportunities for innovation that lie before us.
Let’s be honest about things first though: Australia’s reputation for innovation is not as great as we often think it is. We keep slipping down on global innovation indexes, and our track record of academic engagement on industry research gets a ’could do (a lot) better’ score.  We may have invented the Hills Hoist, the wine cask, wi-fi and spray on skin, but the inventiveness for which we were known up until the 2000s has given way to investment in property.  That’s left us in a difficult position to support the great ideas coming from the startup sector, because it is easier to invest in the things bordered by picket fences than the thing that may make business more competitive.
We have a choice. It may sound like a campaign pitch, but there has genuinely never been a better time to invest in Australian innovation. As the global economy is improving its growth estimates, we have a chance to take advantage of this new confidence, and to develop solutions to problems worth solving.  But it will take a collective confidence in our own ability to innovate to properly shift the confidence of a nation from bricks and mortar, to services and solutions.
Go visit the Spark Festival. Share your thoughts. Let’s get innovation growing.
