Governance in an Age of Automation

In the past week, friends to the Disruptors have been publishing thought-provoking pieces on preparing for a robot boss, and how we deal with growing lawlessness online. While technology and innovation advocates recognise the opportunities of automated systems, we often consider the governance of these technologies as someone else’s problem.
But it is our problem. Unless we can face and mitigate the threats that inevitably arise from the introduction of innovation in business, we are not being authentic in our advocacy. Without considering the risks, and developing an appropriate governance framework, it is not possible to calculate the true value of innovation.
The net value of innovation always involves some cost. Governance is a significant component of that cost, and innovation activists should be honest in their appraisal if they are to inspire trust.
