Failing Bravely

A good friend of the Disruptors recently posted on LinkedIn about a failure of a planned business in a competitive marketplace, and acknowledged the need to find a new project. It was a brave post, and one which highlighted the insight and practicality of the CEO in deciding to move on.
There’s no doubt, all failures hurt. And it’s also essential to fail in order to learn what can be done better in another context. But increasing evidence suggests that failure has to be handled well in order for true learning to take place. Failure without embracing the lessons from these experiences can potentially be more damaging than failure alone.
There have been recent questions raised on the possibility that frequency of failure can increase the likelihood of future failure. We would argue that you need to develop the right sort of resilience to failure in order to learn from it - what we’d call failing bravely.
Business and organisations need to learn how to fail bravely in order to innovate effectively. It does mean swallowing the ego and feeling the pain. But it can make business - and the world - a better place.
And finally, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the life of one of the Disruptor’s Handbook family, who devoted her life to making the world a better place. Vale, Suzie Graham (Sundari Vrajesvari Devi Dasi).  Your luminance will be felt by all those you met and worked with, for all their days.
