Digital Anxiety: A threat innovators cannot ignore
By Disruptors Co • Issue #115 • View online
This week the Disruptors are kicking off a new accelerator program with a social enterprise client, including a number of startups in the cohort. We are excited about the opportunities opening up for the beneficiaries of the innovation happening in the accelerator, both for the startups and for the enterprise and its customers.
But we are also aware that there is a growing fear in the community about the impact of digital disruption on job automation, inequality and work-life balance. Some commentators are even arguing that this digital anxiety is the cause of the current political divide across the western world.
This is one of several reasons why our latest accelerator is focused on wellbeing. Yes, we are facilitating development of services that improve evidence based decision making and problem solving, but we are also facilitating development of utilities to measure and improve wellbeing.
We believe a balance between developing technologies to improve productivity as well as to continuously contribute towards better lives is crucial to maintaining trust in innovation. With declining values for startup exit deals, and increasing concerns about technology security as well as potentially invasive regulatory systems, there is a need to focus attention as much on the human impact of disruption as on technology. Without that due attention, disruption anxiety may lead to innovation stagnation. And that isn’t good for anyone.
