Cultural change doesn’t have to be slow. If you’re trying to alter the culture in an enterprise to become more open to innovation, then you probably need to find ways to do so quickly rather than at the glacial pace that a mere change of process will usually provoke.
The short cut method is to separate an innovation hub from the rest of the business; to have a “safe space” to innovate without it affecting the core business of the firm, and to use the output of that innovation hub to inspire the firm over time.
But this method is deeply flawed. Not only does innovation become the activity that people do “over there in the hub”, it actually fails to change behaviours throughout the firm.
