In this, our last newsletter before Christmas, we thought we’d share with you some of our predictions for 2018, as well as filling you in on the projects we will be exploring next year.
First: the predictions. We think 2018 will be a watershed year for corporate innovation. But we think the investment in the process will be much shrewd than either the scatter-gun approach of investment in existing startups, or the traditional method of internal research and development.
The reason for this shift is based in macroeconomics as well as in investor scarcity. Investment conditions from angels and venture capital organisations are shifting from growth-at-all-costs to growth-with-fundamentals, and in some markets like Australia, there are fewer (but larger, and often more mature) investment deals to be struck. Corporate investment in innovation will need to fill the gap in the early-stage innovation landscape. But corporate investments can’t be as flexible as the traditional investor approach in original ideas.
Also, as economies across the world become more fragile - and from Europe to the US and even in Asia, economies are being affected by changes in energy use, currency value and population distribution - innovation is key to competitive advantage. But investment in innovation needs to be strategic. There needs to be alignment between the goals of the business and the innovations pursued. As such, corporate innovation which connects innovators and startups with businesses will be essential for corporate resilience.
And what about Disruptor’s Handbook’s role in 2018? We have started working with a new client delivering innovation for social benefit, as well as continuing to deliver innovation change management and technology strategy for retail and corporate brands. We are also looking to work more with government and industry organisations to help facilitate targeted innovation.
So far, between January and June next year, we have something like eight rapid prototyping events lined up, ranging from executive roundtables to design jams and hackathons. It’s going to be a busy year!
We wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season, and we look forward to engaging with you all in 2018.
